Today I would like to remind those of you who actually takes the time to read the opinions on here that the War we are fighting against injustice is far from over.
I have touched on the subject in one of the previous posts about the state of the World as it today, and our reluctance as humankind to equally decry the state of affairs in the World became apparent to me during the course of the week.
You might be wondering what I am on about, and I will gladly explain my viewpoint on this statement, so you must please excuse the length of this post.
The Israeli / Gaza conflict has grabbed everyone’s attention, and it has focused everyone on the subject, people from both sides of the fence are up in arms about what the other side is doing and trying to justify why his/her side has the legitimacy to perform these acts of violence. This is where I believe that most of the people trying to justify the wrongs of the sides they have backed are missing the point while there are innocent people on both sides of the conflict suffering because those in power on both sides are either unwilling, or that they simply do not care enough to put an end to the violence.
This is not only happening in Israel and Gaza. It is happening all over the World, and the scary part is that everyone is to busy bickering about which side is right and which side is wrong that we are letting all the other atrocities slip by unnoticed.
Yesterday two bombs exploded in Kaduna, Nigeria. 82 people died, the suspected culprits are of course, the new (old) bad boys on the block, Boko Haram. An Islamist religious sect with the goal of creating an Islamic state in Nigeria governed by Sharia laws. During the last couple of weeks they have intensified their operations and have targeted moderate Islamic scholars and leaders who have denounced their actions as non-Islamic.
At the very same time, Christians in Iraq, who is most arguably one of the oldest Christian communities in the World and who’s numbers were more than a million strong during the reign of Saddam Hussein, are being driven from Mosul by the IS, a Sunni led Islamist sect also bend on creating a Islamic caliphate in Iraq and Syria, in fear of their lives. Their victims are numbering in the thousands already, and they are not only focusing on Christians. They are indiscriminately killing anyone who would try and oppose them, much the same way as Boko Haram is doing in Nigeria.
These along with major conflicts like the conflict in the Ukraine between the pro-Western backed rulers in Kiev, and the pro-Eastern backed separatists in Crimea are but some of the atrocities which are being committed World wide while we idly sit by and bicker about who is right and who is wrong in the Israeli / Gaza conflict.
Sadly, this is not where it stops, and this brings me to the point I want to carry over.
All over the globe innocents are suffering because of violent crimes, crimes which nobody can even try and justify. Crimes not linked to political or religious ideologies, but crimes which are a testament to the decay of human civilization as a whole.
In South Africa a young boy called Taegrin Morris, aged 4, was killed during a hijacking. We was in the car with his family when they got hijacked by a group of men. They ordered the family out of the car, and Taegrin was left hanging halfway out of the car in his safety belt and was dragged as the car was driven off by the highjackers.
His body was found later on, 8 to 10 kilometers away from where the incident took place.
In India a young girl of 6 was raped by a teacher at her school, and another was raped and found hanging from a tree. This after an initial International outcry over a med student who was fatally raped by a group of men, despite the Indian Government’s assurance that violent crime against women and girls won’t be tolerated.
Yet, the World in general stays quiet … We stay quiet.
Why are we not out in the streets demanding justice from our Governments for these heinous crimes? Why are we not protesting the fate of the people who are suffering at the hands of fanatical religious zealots in front of our Government buildings and the local embassies?
Change starts with us, and as long as we stay quiet more will suffer as we say nothing and refuse to acknowledge the problems in our societies as a whole.
We must stop turning a blind eye to events like this, and we must start acting upon them.
With that being said, I am not encouraging acts of vigilantism, nor am I suggesting that we should from angry mobs with pitchforks and burning torches. What I am saying is that we must start working together to survive this onslaught on our humanity, that we should force our Governments to start delivering on their promises. We should start protesting the injustices we see all over the globe where we see our fellow human beings suffering the plight of violent crime and oppression. We must strike where it hurts the most, and that is at the pockets of those unwilling to stop the massacre which is taking place daily around us.
People like Taegrin and the 7 year old Indian girl do not enjoy the same type of coverage as conflicts like the Israeli / Gaza conflict, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is happening all around us, and we are the ones allowing it through our silence.
So with this writing, I implore you to start acting. Become involved, form communities and care for each other regardless of race, religion or political affiliation. Look past your differences and focus on what you have in common. Everyone has loved ones, everyone has family, dreams and aspirations. Time to stop bickering about the differences and to start focusing and working together for a future, something we all have in common.
